Owing to the trend of growing aging population and increasing burden of chronic diseases, traditional medicine has become a global trend in the health care worldwide. Although Taiwan is not a member of the WHO, we have already established a dedicated health management authority – Ministry of Health and Welfare, where the public may conveniently choose TCM or Western medicine, therefore the country’s efforts in management and development of traditional medicine are in line with the strategic goals of the WHO in traditional medicine development.

In facilitating sustainable developments in Chinese medicine and Chinese pharmacy, and building on an already solid foundation, the Ministry will be committed to the following: creating a Chinese medicine physician specialist system; developing diversified Chinese medicine medical care model; promoting integrated medical care of Western/Chinese medicine; establishing clinical skills testing center for Chinese medicine; reinforcing inspection of imported TCM materials; dynamically amending the abnormal substances limit of TCM materials and products; monitoring the TCM quality control in the market; promoting validation among TCM pharmaceutical factories; publishing third edition of Taiwan Herbal Pharmacopeia; reviewing TCM course standards for pharmacists; facilitating international traditional medicine collaborations with New Southward Policy nations. The objective is to keep up with the international trend and integrate domestic/foreign resources to provide the public with the most comprehensive medical care service from Chinese as well as western medicine.

In the future, Taiwan’s health authority will continually maintain Chinese medicine under the auspices of National Health Insurance Service, promote the communication platform of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, integrate both Eastern and Western medicine for the benefits of health and medical care, and enhance TCM quality control management in order to ensure health and welfare for the public. In addition, Taiwan's experience with creating a workable TCM/Western Health Care system is also available. We are happy to share our experience and knowledge with other countries in the integration of tradition medicine into the health system, and mutually learn from each other regarding training, regulations, standards, research and development of traditional medicine.
